Audiovisual Technologies!!

For both audio and visual technologies, identify one traditional and one emerging technology from the book, and explain how you could potentially use all four devices in the classroom. Post your responses on your blog page you created for this class.
TRADITIONAL:
AUDIO: Headphones and cassette tapes of books would make a great center in an early childhood education classroom. Children can get tired of reading books day after day, especially at a young age. Listening to a book on tape while following along in a book can teach a child speech/pronunciation, listening and following along skills and proper reading etiquette.
VISUAL: Every elementary classroom has this traditional visual aide in their room, a poster line of the alphabet. This has been around forever and will continue to serve as a visual assistant to help children learn the alphabet and the proper way to write it.

EMERGING:
AUDIO: In a child’s early elementary years (Pre-1) children are learning the letters of the alphabet and the sounds each letter makes. There are many audio toys that sound a certain letter when pushed. There are also I-pod/pad applications that can perform these measures. This familiarizes a child with each letter not only visually, but also plays the letter/sound for the child to hear and associate the visual with. For more advanced learners, they could even try another language!
VISUAL: A document camera is a perfect example of an emerging visual technology. If doing a science experiment in the classroom, a teacher can blow up say a dissection of an owl pellet, so everyone can view it from the big projector screen up close. This is great because everyone becomes engaged and is able to see a visual of what is going on. The children can take notes from their seats and are not running around the classroom trying to get involved. Technologies like this are very beneficial for the teacher as well because they have better control over the class and can perform more scientific lessons.

More or less digital technologies in your classroom?

Question: Based on the information in chapter 6, would you prefer to teach in a classroom that had more or less digital technologies? Why or why not?

After reading the chapter and previewing all of the amazing modern day technology that can be brought into a classroom I am very fascinated, from electronic whiteboards to E-books, there are a plethora of activities and lessons to teach. Technologies such as; scanner, digital camera, microphones, graphic tablets, touch screens, electronic whiteboards, as listed in the book, along with other devices are all very efficient and can serve for multiple educational purposes in the classroom. Depending on a teachers abilities on the products the capabilities of incorporating those technologies into lessons are endless. As a teacher, I hope to have a fair amount of technologies in my classroom because it can serve as an aide and help children who struggle with concepts, possibly pick up on the those concepts much easier, there is a hardware or software for about any academic or administrative need (pg.145). For example, children with hearing disabilities would greatly benefit from speakers set up in the classroom, which would enhance the sound of the teacher’s voice (pg.151).  However, as much as I love useful advanced technology, as a future elementary teacher I think many lessons are still best taught the old fashioned way.  Though software programs and applications may be a great aide and may be more enduring for children to do, things like handwriting is something that I think children will learn best with a simple pencil, paper and practice!

Rainy Day

The rain outside weakens my heart and soul, it depresses my mind but it will never get to my dignity...
